West Bloomfield Needs to Organize for Life

When asked, prolife residents of West Bloomfield Township have to admit their community is a very challenging place to defend and promote the unalienable right to life.

Many of our neighbors simply do not share our belief that the right to live begins at the moment of conception. They have embraced or accepted the false notion that abortion is a "choice" protected by a women's right to "control her own body".

But "pro-choicers" forget the unborn baby is a body separate and unique from mom, a tiny human being in mom's womb, like all of us once were.

In 2008, 62 percent of West Bloomfield voters supported Barack Obama, who quickly established himself as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. History (See Link). They showed even stronger support for pro-legal abortion U.S. Senator Carl Levin (70%) and State Proposal 2 (73%), which amended the Michigan constitution to allow researchers to kill human embryos.

But there is good news, too, something we can build upon. West Bloomfield voters supported these Right to Life of Michigan-PAC endorsed candidates in 2008: Rep. Gail Haines, Sheriff Michael Bouchard, County Commissioners John Scott and Shelley Goodman Taub, and Circuit Court Judges Lisa Gocyca and Mary Ellen Brennan.

What can be done to educate our neighbors about the unalienable right to life, change people's hearts and minds, and, hopefully, motivate them to get involved in the prolife movement?

Right to Life of Michigan affiliates are community-based, volunteer-run groups that seek to "build bridges" among prolifers in their community so that, working together, they can educate, encourage, and provide direction for prolife residents who want to make a difference for life but don't know where to begin.

All that is needed to launch an affiliate are motivated concerned residents who: 1) Want to organize; 2) See a need for collaborative efforts that extend across West Bloomfield, not just within the confines of their own church, synagogue, mosque, or school; and 3) Wish to "connect"with Right to Life of Michigan, other Oakland County affiliates, and the statewide network of 100-plus affiliates.

Together, we can do more to defend and promote life in West Bloomfield.
