Cognitive Dissonance within the US Medical Profession
by Barb Yagley
How do people trained to heal cope with doing abortions? The short answer is special-training. Abortion providers have not been highly regarded within the medical profession, but the demand for their services has remained relatively constant for two generations. The medical schools have tried to reduce the stigma and increase the number of abortionists by offering (and sometimes, mandating) abortion training for students and residents. But new doctors have found that abortion is more involved that just practicing the technique on a papaya. As one Medical Student for Choice put it, ...

Planned Parenthood discredits itself by its activities
by Barb Yagley
A recent AP article1 decried the negative publicity that has recently plagued Planned Parenthood . While touting Planned Parenthood's low cost, government-subsidized health services for women, the article ignored its penchant for promoting sexual activity among young teens. Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) is quoted as saying, "In my community, Planned Parenthood is a very highly regarded mainstream organization". The questions are - is Planned Parenthood mainstream and is it right for our community?

Open Minds, Open Hearts, Fair-Minded Words
by Barb Yagley
A civil discussion regarding abortion has great appeal. In October, an adventuresome group of people organized a conference at Princeton University with the goal of finding common ground on abortion. The conference, "Open Hearts, Open Minds - Fair-Minded Words" drew its inspiration from a speech by President Obama at Notre Dame in 2009. The organizers ...

Article: Progressives of both Parties wage war against the unborn -- by Barb Yagley
The up-coming election on November 2nd has been called a referendum on government expansionism but it is also an opportunity to reject a pervasive, eugenics philosophy as articulated by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg. In a 2009 New York Times interview, she said, "Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of." Eugenics justifies killing unwanted, burdensome human beings to solve social problems.

Who is Deceiving Who?
by Barb Yagley (Central Oakland Right to Life)
Pregnancy resource centers provide free, valuable services to the women of our community at little or no cost to taxpayers. They are "there" for the pregnant woman; listening to her fears, counseling her on positive life-changing choices, and providing direct assistance or referrals throughout the pregnancy and beyond, as needed. Testimonies by clients abound on the internet. On Oakland University Students for Life chapter's website, a 24 year old father of a 4 year old girl wrote "Many people know [crisis pregnancy centers] as affiliated with pro-life 'propaganda', where they 'brainwash' people into not having an abortion. It is very rare to ever encounter a center which ...

The Contrasts between the Canadian and U.S. Approach to Reducing Maternal Mortality
by Barb Yagley (Central Oakland Right to Life)
Kudos to the Canadian government for their rational approach to reducing maternal deaths from pregnancy or childbirth complications without sinking into abortion politics. Guess what, U.S. government.. poor countries don't need you to force abortion on them in order to reduce maternal mortality. Clean water, trained midwives actually do save women's lives.

Laws against Coerced Abortions - Are they necessary?
by Barb Yagley (Central Oakland Right to Life)
Some believe that we don't need a law to allow women legal recourse after they've been coerced into submitting to abortion. The abortion providers admit to routinely performing abortions on coerced women, because in their view, "if women are unable to get an abortion demanded by their partners, some may be at risk of experiencing physical violence from the partner. Some of this violence might be perpetrated with the intention of inducing an abortion. Denying such a woman a safe abortion can therefore endanger her health." Better to medically remove and kill a "wanted" baby than to risk having the partner beat it out of the mother. This is justice in 21st century America.

by Barb Yagley (Central Oakland Right to Life)
When women have no choice but to submit to unwanted sex, this is called "reproductive coercion" and over 50% of family planning clinic clients experience this or Intimate Partner Violence. But ladies, it doesn't have to be this way.

Opinion: Early feminists opposed abortion
By Barb Yagley
As we commemorate Women's history month, one historical American woman, who devoted her life to the women's movement in the 19th century, stands heads and shoulders above all others: Susan B. Anthony. But what would she think of today's feminists?

Opinion: Pro-Choice Hysteria in HealthCare Debate - by Barb Yagley (Central Oakland Right to Life)
Defusing the "pro-choice" hysteria about abortion and health care reform ... Two truths have surfaced during the health care debate: (1) Abortion has been part of all proposed health care legislation until the U.S. House voted to exclude it and (2) Abortion continues to be the most divisive issue of our time and now threatens to derail the health care reform effort.
